How do I map a directory on a server as a network drive?

Body

This page has instructions for mapping a server directory as a network drive.

The video above is a less-than-one-minute video showing how to connect to a share named "\\perez\ACU_Dallas" on a Windows 10 PC.

Before you can map a drive, you need to be granted access to the directory. See: How do I Get Access to a Network Shared Directory on a Server?

Windows

Note: If you were already logged into your computer when IT granted your access, you may need to log out of Windows, then sign back in before these steps will work.

  1. Launch the "This PC" desktop app.
  2. Click Computer.
  3. Click Map Network Drive.
  4. Specify the drive letter you would like to use for this drive.
  5. Type the file path of the directory. Note the example below the Folder field.
  6. Click Finish.
  7. Enter your username and password.

Mac

  1. Launch Finder.
  2. Click Go in the menu.
  3. Click Connect to Server.
  4. Enter the server address, e.g. smb://perez/helpdesk (Note smb: is not actually part of the address; it sets the network protocol used to access the address. The address in this example is //perez/helpdesk).
  5. Enter your username and password.
