How do I get access to a network shared directory on a server?

Body

Some departments have shared file directories hosted on ACU servers such as Perez (also called Luke). To access your department's directory, please have your supervisor contact the Support Center to request access for you.

We will need to know the name of the share you need access to. For example, "\\perez\itsupport" would specify access is needed to the "itsupport" share on Perez.

IMPORTANT: The drive letter Windows assigns to the shared directory, e.g., G:, is not helpful in identifying the directory. We need to know its actual name as above.

If your coworkers have mapped the directory as a network drive, you should be able to use that to find the share name.

  • Windows - Open File Explorer and click This PC. The shared directory will be listed under Network locations as "Name (\\Server) (Drive)," e.g., itsupport (\\perez) (G:).
  • Mac - Open Finder. Click Go in the menu bar, then click Computer. Secondary-click (control+click or two-finger click by default) the shared directory, then click Get Info. The address will be listed next to Server as "smb://server/directory," e.g., smb://perez/itsupport.

For instructions to map the directory as a network drive, see: How do I Map a Directory on a Server as a Network Drive?
