Why do I get an error message when adding a printer to my computer?

Body

IPP printing on certain older models of HP printers does not function reliably. When adding a printer that is one of the affected models, you may get a message that either says "Unable to verify the printer on your network" or "Couldn't detect a printer. Please enter printer address again." depending on whether you are adding the printer to a Mac or a Chrome device. To solve this issue, follow the normal printer installation steps but be sure to change the protocol from "Internet Printing Protocol - IPP" to "HP Jetdirect - Socket" or "Line Printer Daemon - LPD" as shown below. Currently the known affected models are:

  • HP LaserJet P2015
  • HP LaserJet P2035
  • HP LaserJet P2055
  • HP Color LaserJet CP5225

For a Mac or Chrome device, you will need to add the printer via the IP address. If you do not already know the IP address of the printer, call the Helpdesk at 325-674-4357 and we will be happy to help you install the printer. For more detailed instructions on installing a printer to your device, please refer to the related article for your type of computer:

Mac Installation Instructions:

  • Once you have the IP address, open System Preferences and click on Printers & Scanners.
  • Click the '+' icon near the bottom left of the page, which will open a new window. Choose the option for 'IP' at the top of the screen.
  • Enter the IP address at the top, select "HP Jetdirect - Socket" as the protocol, and give the printer the name of the building and room it is associated with.

ChromeOS Installation Instructions:

  • Go to the printer settings and select the option to add a new printer.
  • In the first window type in the name and IP address of the printer. Then, select Line Printer Daemon (LPD) as the protocol.
  • Make sure the queue field at the bottom is empty, and select Add.

  • On the next screen, you will be asked to select the model of the printer. Be sure to select the correct model from the list as it will affect whether you are able to use certain features, like double-sided printing or printing from multiple trays. The specific model of the printer can be found on the front of the printer itself. Note any letters (such as D, N, or X) that follow the numbers in the model, as those indicate the specific capabilities of a printer.

If you run into any issues, please call the Helpdesk at 325-674-4357 and we will be happy to assist you with these steps.
