How do I connect to an HP office printer on my Mac?

  • For a Mac computer, you will need to add the printer via the IP address. If you do not already know the IP address of your printer, please call the IT Support Center at 325-674-5555 and we will be happy to help you install the printer.
  • Once you have the IP address of the printer, open System Preferences, then click on Printers & Scanners.

  • In the window that opens, click the plus button near the bottom left side to add a printer.

  • Click IP (Globe icon) at the top of the window that opens. In the Address field, input the IP address of the printer and select "IPP - Internet Printing Protocol" in the protocol drop down. Next, change the "Name" field to the established name for it. (For example, ZEL200_1, or LIB214_MFP). If the printer is configured correctly, the asset ID of the printer (beginning with either ACU or AB) should appear in the location field. This is for you to easily be able to ensure you are installing the intended printer.
    • If the IP address you are trying to enter follows the format 150.252.x.x instead of 10.66.x.x or if the location field auto-fills incorrect information when adding a printer to your computer, please contact the Support Center so the printer can be properly configured.

  • If the Use option at the bottom doesn't show the printer's model you may need to install the HP driver packages. To do this, click the Self Service Support Center in your Mac's Menu Bar in the top-right corner of the screen. Then click Get Software. In the new window, click Printers, then click Install under HP Printer Drivers.
    • Some older printers may not have a specific driver, so you will have to change Protocol to "LPD - Line Printer Daemon" and Use "Generic PostScript Printer" at the bottom. An additional window will pop up to allow you to select options such as duplex (double sided) printing or multiple trays. Make sure you know what options your printer supports when selecting these and please contact the IT Support Center if you're unsure.
    • A good rule of thumb for printers you might need to do this with are printers having an ACU asset tag that begins with 12 or HP printer model numbers that do not begin with M such as P or CP series printers.

  • If you receive an error message that says "Unable to verify the printer on your network" please double check that you have entered the correct IP address. If you are sure you've entered the IP address correctly, please refer to this article.
  • Once the installation is complete you should see the new printer in your list of installed printers.

If you run into any issues, please call the Support Center at 325-674-5555 and we will be happy to assist you with these steps.
